The Move-Out Clean Checklist That Actually Protects Your Deposit

People move out of a Houston rental, spend a full weekend cleaning, and still lose part of the deposit. It is rarely because they did not work hard enough. It is because an empty property gets judged on a completely different list from the one people clean to — and almost all of it is inside things, not on top of them.

Start with the fact that changes everything: there is no furniture left. Every mark on a wall, every scuff on a baseboard, every dust line where a couch sat for two years is now visible from the doorway. The things that were genuinely invisible for the whole tenancy are the things an inspection sees first.

The oven is the single most common deduction, and it is the one people most often skip. Not the front of it — inside it, including the racks, the door glass and the rim where spills run down. If you are doing it yourself, start it the day before, because a proper oven clean is not a twenty-minute job and a half-done one looks worse than an untouched one.

The fridge is second. Inside, including the drawers, the shelves, the door seals and the tray underneath. Then pull it out and clean the floor and the wall behind it, because that is where an inspector looks the moment they see a fridge that has clearly never been moved. The same applies to the stove.

Third: cabinet and drawer interiors, every one of them. An empty cabinet with crumbs in the corner reads as a property that was not cleaned at all, regardless of how good the counters look. Wipe them out, including the runners and the underside of the shelf above.

Fourth: the edges of everything. Baseboards, door frames, switch plates, window sills and window tracks. Tracks in particular — sliding door and window tracks collect a thick line of grit that nobody has touched since move-in day, and it is a place inspectors genuinely check because it is such a reliable tell.

Bathrooms come back to fixtures, not surfaces. Grout scrubbed rather than wiped, the shower glass taken back to clear, the tracks in the shower door, the base of the toilet and behind it, the underside of the seat, and the extractor vent cover. Limescale on a fixture is a deduction; the same fixture cleaned properly is not.

Then the things people forget entirely: blinds, ceiling fan blades, light fixtures and the bulbs in them, air vent covers, the inside of the washer and dryer if they came with the property, and the patio or balcony swept down. Also the garage floor, if there is one — an oil patch that was there when you arrived should have been on the move-in inventory, and if it was not, it is now yours.

Finally, do floors last and do them on the way out. Cleaning the floors before you clean anything else is the most common sequencing mistake there is: everything you do afterwards puts dust straight back onto them, and it is why a property can be cleaned for two days and still show footprints and grit at the walkthrough.

If that list looks like more than a weekend, it usually is — a full move-out clean on a three-bedroom house is a long day for two people who do it professionally.
