Standard Clean vs. Deep Clean: Which One Does Your Home Actually Need?

Almost every quote we give starts with the same question: do I need a regular clean or a deep clean? People usually guess, and the guess goes wrong in both directions — booking a standard clean for a house that has not been properly done in a year, or paying for a deep clean on a home that is already in good shape. Here is how to tell.

A standard clean covers what a home uses every day. Kitchen counters, the outside of appliances, the sink and stovetop. Bathrooms: toilet, tub, shower, tile, mirrors, fixtures. Floors vacuumed and mopped. Dusting from the high surfaces down to the sills. Beds made, trash out, glass clean. It is thorough, it is on a checklist, and on a home that is already maintained it holds the place at a consistent standard indefinitely.

A deep clean is not a better version of that — it is a different list. It goes after everything a standard visit has to leave alone for time: baseboards and door frames hand-wiped, switch plates, inside the oven, inside the fridge, cabinet and drawer interiors, grout scrubbed rather than mopped over, light fixtures, ceiling fans, vents, window tracks, and the floor under furniture we can safely move. It takes considerably longer, which is the whole reason it is not part of every visit.

The simplest test is time. If it has been more than about six months since anyone did the baseboards, the oven and the grout, you need a deep clean — a standard visit will make the house look better and will not touch the actual backlog. If someone has been keeping on top of it, a standard clean is the right call and a deep clean is money you do not need to spend this month.

The second test is what you can see from a low angle. Crouch down in a doorway and look along the baseboard, then look up at the vent above the stove and the tops of the door frames. Those three places tell you the truth about a house faster than the countertops do, because nobody cleans them casually.

This is why we usually suggest opening a recurring schedule with one deep clean. Starting a bi-weekly schedule on a house with a year of buildup means every visit spends its time fighting the backlog instead of maintaining the house, and it never quite catches up. Clear it once, then the regular visits genuinely hold it — and they cost less than the deep clean did.

There are a few situations where the answer is always a deep clean regardless of timing. After a renovation or a new build, because construction dust keeps working its way out of vents and tracks for weeks. Before a property goes on the market. After a long illness in the house. And any time you are taking over a property someone else lived in, where you have no idea what the last twelve months looked like.

One thing worth being honest about: a deep clean is not a guarantee against everything. It will not fix damaged grout, it will not restore a finish that has already been stripped by the wrong product, and it will not remove a stain that has been in a carpet for three years. We will tell you which of those we are looking at rather than charging you for an outcome that is not available.
